Thank You Note: For Shabbat Dinners With Friends

November 12, 2010

Candles, challah, wine (or grape juice for the kids and the teetotalers like me) … these have become the staples of our Friday night meals, where we welcome in Shabbat, the Jewish Sabbath. Winding down our busy week by taking the time to recite traditional blessings for things like light and bread and the fruit of the earth creates a beautiful awareness that we are part of something far larger than just ourselves.

Wonderful friends, too, have become a treasured staple of these meals. Good conversation for the adults and good companionship among the kids bring even more pleasure to this comfort-food-filled evening.

For all this, I am truly thankful. And I can’t wait for dinnertime tonight!

Thanks for the reminder. It’s been a long time since I lit candles. Tonight’s a good night to start again …
